Technological Overview continued.

Cellular antennas are designed to be half the wavelength of their respective frequency. This means that sometimes a fully extended antenna is not the most effective. Below are sample calculations to determine wavelengths of 800 MHz and 1900 MHz:

h (lambda) = 0.07895m

However, most people do not hold their phone at a 90 degree angle. So, wireless engineers developed cell phone antennas to be 5/8 of the length of wavelengths. Through calculations, the optimum position to hold a phone is at 53 degrees.
